How to do check anchor windlass regularly?
Regular check work is key point for ensuring good condition. At least once half a year, and do records. It mainly includes crack, loose structure, deformation and weariness.
First is anchor. The most vulnerable parts of anchor winch are fluke, anchor rim, lateral pin and anchor shackle. Fluke may has bend and crack, it is easy to become weary, lateral pin is easy to get loose, anchor shackle get weary and produces cracks. According to standards, the weariness of lateral pin should be under 10% of original diameter. Weightlessness of anchor should be less than 20% of original weight. If the damage is much serious, replace anchor timely, send damaged anchor to the factory for repair.
Second is anchor chain. The link and shackle used for long time can produce weariness, crack, deformation and loose structure. Thus it is necessary to check for weariness, crack, deformation and loose structure.
Third is weariness. Check the friction part of anchor chain drum and connecting part of links. Just measure the diameter with caliper. The chain weariness has limit, for anchor chain of ocean-going ships, average diameter of wearied diameter should be more than 80% of original diameter. For anchor chain of offshore and coastal trading ships, average diameter of wearied diameter should be more than 85% of original diameter. For shackle or open link, the weariness exceeds 8% of original diameter, just give up and replace new one.
Fourth is deformation. Take visual check or measure to check whether the link is twisted or deformed.
Fifth is loose structure. The pin that connects link and shackle becomes loose caused by seal off. Check one by one carefully.
Sixth is crack. Knocking every link and shackle with hammer, listen to the sound and check whether it is clear.
